Pope Francis calls on Mexico’s bishops to fight drugs and corruption

Tens of thousands have gathered in the central square in Mexico City for a papal mass.

The Argentine-born Pope Francis continues to draw huge crowds on this extended trip,
and he was presented with the keys to the city. Mexico is the Roman Catholic church’s second-biggest diocese, and Pope Francis will visit some of its poorest corners, including the crime-riven border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Before the public events on Saturday Francis met with Mexico’s bishops, and told them they needed to be far more active against the drugs trade and corruption, both “cancers” he said that were “devouring the country”.

He also called on the Mexican church to strengthen ties with the US episcopate.
